The Arbuthnot Trial turns 100!

The Arbuthnot Trial will return to Salisbury this September for its centenary, and has special plans to mark the milestone.

The long-distance British Motorcycle trial for classic and vintage machines is organised each year by the Salisbury Motorcycle and Light Car Club Ltd.

This year’s Trial will take place on Sunday the 3^rd of September, beginning at 9am.

As the centenary, this year will include a special checkpoint in Salisbury Market Square. Here riders will be greeted by the mayor between 9.30 and 11am at the Blue Boar Row.

Beginning in 1923, the Trial is held in recognition of Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, a Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy and member of the Motor Cycling Club. Arbuthnot enjoyed long distance endurance races and in 1908 came third in the single-cylinder class of the Isle of Man TT. He died in 1916.

Riders wear period clothes as they travel on the public road, permitted byways, and private land, including taking in approximately 80 miles of the Wiltshire chalk down countryside. Sections of the Trial cover private land in the countryside which is only accessible once a year.

The Trial begins at 9am at The Barford Inn, with a lunch stop at Rushmore Golf Club, before finishing back at The Barford Inn.
