“MM Super Test Two Super Scooters

SX200 sounds like one of those science fiction space-shop names but it isn’t – it is the designation for the new, smoother version of the Lambretta GT.

The fastest scooter we ever tested, the GT was said to vibrate too much, so it had the compression ratio lowered by fitting a thicker head gasket. A more efficient silencer from a smaller model was added and this made up the SX200.

This de-tuning has dropped the top speed from 70mph to 61, while the acceleration times have increased. The pay-off comes in increased flexibility and the ability to potter about in a higher gear than is possible with the GT.

We always try out our road-test bikes at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk, as this gives us a fair chance of trying for top speeds (if they are over 70mph) and allows us uninterrupted time to do timed runs.

One of the staff does not like scooters at all – and never misses a chance to say how he thinks they don’t handle.

To prove the point, another staffman took the SX and did two full laps without touching the handlebars! This isn’t to be tried on public roads but it did show just how good modern scooters are. The same staffman could not think of any bike that he could have tried the same stunt on successfully.

The SX200 has the usual Lambretta control layout. The choke and petrol tap are found on the front of the engine compartment just under the seat, while lights and sparks are controlled from the central switch and key mounted in the rear of the steering column.

The petrol tap has a reserve position which is just as well, as the bikes proved thirsty when ridden hard…”
