Q&A: Cracked Confidence
By: Web Editor
Q: I own a 1995 Honda NC30, which has a crack in the weld on the headstock...
The weld joins the side beam extrusion to the cast headstock and the crack is approximately 75mm in length and does not extend into the frame components. Is it possible to weld the crack and, if so, what is the best process? Naturally, I’ve stopped riding the bike until the problem is fixed, but would really like to get it fixed and to be back riding it. Is this a common problem on NC30s? I have never seen a cracked weld on an aluminium frame before.

A: This does not sound too good. I should have thought the most likely reason for a crack to appear is that the bike has been crashed at some point in the past. I wonder if the frame is bent, which would confirm this idea? You might be advised to contact a company used to straightening frames to ask their opinion on the best way forward. One such is Maidstone Motoliner: call them on 01622 790705.
