Brands Hatch hosts first of GSXR-750 celebrations
By: Web Editor
Suzuki’s 25th anniversary celebrations for the GSX-R 750 kicked off in style at Brands Hatch circuit on 7 April.
The event, which was open to both Suzuki owners and enthusiasts, saw dozens of riders descend on the Kent circuit, being welcomed with a commemorative blue shirt from Suzuki. The attendance of current GSX-R British Superbike riders Yukio Kagayama, Tommy Hill, Michael Laverty and Alistair Sealey, made the historic event even more sensational and members of the public were permitted to get up-close-and-personal with the superstars during autograph signings and photograph opportunities. They also took to the track on their contemporary machines, providing practical demonstrations to bedazzled onlookers. One of the nicest original GSX-R750s in attendance belonged to Chris Poolman of Somerset. His 1986 example is still used for day-to-day riding and typically covers 3000 miles annually on his 24-year-old motorcycle. With the sinuous Brands Hatch Indy circuit subject to light rain in the morning, there were some inevitable tumbles, but nothing serious. The rain became more determined in the afternoon and some riders decided precipitation beat participation. It remains to be seen whether the other set commemorative Suzuki dates at Snetterton on 13 July and Cadwell Park on 1 September will be graced with even more enthusiasts and hopefully better weather.
