Is it really 23 years since the Kawasaki ZZ-R slipstreamed its way into our collective motorcycling psyche?

Back then I was unsuccessfully sitting exams (it was the 1990 World Cup, after all) but even I remember flicking the hair out of my eyes long enough to catch a glimpse of what was the fastest production bike in the world. I wanted one, and I wanted one badly.

Time moved on, as did I, and I finally managed to get two summers’ riding on a ZZ-R1100 in 1998. Even after a year on the better Honda Blackbird I was still knocked out by the sheer silky smooth speed generated by that turbine of a motor. Today a ZZ-R1100 represents a great modern-classic buy. I’m tempted with turning back the clock and splashing the cash on one. The machine from our main test would cost you just £1300.

As you may have noticed, I’m not ‘acting’ anymore (although some people say that’s all I do.) I’m chuffed to be at the helm of CMM at an exciting time in its development and I’m hoping you, the readers, will tell me what you want to see in the magazine. It does need to reflect what’s happening out there and to that end, I will be getting out and about at shows, track days and autojumbles to soak up the scene. So, if you see me out, nudge me awake and I may just share the contents of my thermos flask with you. Pip pip!
